Keep your house cool in the Summer

There's so much to look forward to in the Summer months – longer days, weekends by the pool or at the beach, ice-cream, and the festive break just around the corner. But for all its pleasures, Summer also has its drawbacks. Mosquitos, for one (that's a whole other blog post) and of course struggling to sleep on those ultra-balmy Summer's nights.

If you value a good night's rest, then these tips and smart buys will keep you fresh, well-rested and comfortable even on the hottest days and nights.

Go natural

If you find yourself losing sleep turning the pillow over and over to locate the cold spot, it might be time to get a latex pillow. It might not seem like it, but latex is a natural material, and therefore, breathability is one of its bests features. You want breathability in your bedding and pillows because these allow air to flow freely through the fibres, so body heat does not get trapped, making you perspire.

When it comes to sheets and duvet covers, cotton is the best option. Soft and breathable with hypoallergenic qualities, cotton is also really durable so it'll last you a lot longer than blends or polyester. So, wherever possible, invest in cotton bedding. You'll enjoy a more comfortable sleep in Summer, and your money will work harder for you in the long term.

Block it out

At this time of year, you might be looking to refresh your home with a few new décor items. Changing your curtains is an easy and inexpensive way to give your home a lift. Buy smart and invest in block-out curtains or block-out blinds. Made with material that prevents UV ray penetration, these nifty creations keep the heat out in Summer and help to retain it during Winter.

Bonus tip: Keep your curtains or blinds shut throughout the day for a cooler interior.

Fan-tastic

Some days, all you need is for the air in a room to flow freely. A high-velocity wall or ceiling fan will do the trick. Portability is useful if you're moving between rooms and there are a few options that come with a built-in humidifier. These are great for cooling down the room and adding back the moisture drawn out of the air on those extra hot days.

Bonus tip: Make sure your ceiling fan is rotating in a counter-clockwise direction in Summer.

The smartest buy

Air conditioning offers relief when the heat becomes unbearable. It's never been a better time to invest in air conditioning for your home since newer models on the market are more energy-efficient and friendlier to the environment. Look for air conditioning units that include inverter technology. These maintain a steady, optimal room temperature without the heavy energy consumption of older models.

Bonus tip: Between 18°C and 22°C, air conditioners are typically at their most energy-efficient. But lowering the temperature more than 10°C below the room temperature will use more energy.
